Artist Statement:
After a solo show -Women on the Verge- comprised of oil portraits of women, I began working on a series called Comfort Zones, work derived from textiles, and shown in a New York City gallery in 2012. The Cotton Industry was only partially correct when it coined "cotton, the fabric of our lives". In fact, TEXTILES are the fabrics that surround, comfort and define our homes and our bodies. We are able to communicate something about ourselves by the very selection of color, pattern and fabrics which help to create identities, personalize our environments . The European courts traveled with large tapestries which by the simple act of hanging recreated the power and spirit of the court. Textiles create our comfort zones.
I come by my interest in textiles honestly, both sides of the family were textile manufacturers and my first paying job was in the family business designing printed fabrics. I turned to fabric based paintings to expand the exploration of my interest in color, and in a way they are color field paintings that strive to elicit an emotional response by the juxtaposition of color and a variety of techniques from direct painting to infinite glazing. I find beauty, mystery and sensuality in the study of textiles and great joy in using fabric as a jumping off point for my continuing romance with color and paint.
My inspiration for my paintings are as varied as Kilim pillows, an Uzbekistan coat in a museum, the folds of a garment in Greek sculpture, Navajo blankets, kimonos, Sari cloth, or the color of frescos in Italy. My art historical gods are Bonnard, Matisse, Rothko, Deibenkorn, late Monet, and Richter. I have painted my entire life and am continually surprised by the magical process of the transformative act of painting.
